The statement highlights escalating violence in Sudan, including mass killings, displacement and repression of journalists. It urges the council to condemn these crimes, ensure independent reporting, and refer the situation to the International Criminal Court for accountability.
The statement, presented by the organization on behalf of a number of Sudanese human rights organizations and civil society institutions, read as follows:
Mr. President,
Sudan is seeing a dangerous escalation of violence and violation of human rights and international humanitarian, notably Darfur and central areas. These are violations with war crimes and crimes against humanity with more than 440 civilians including 337 were killed during a massacre in Kumbo Al-Taiba as well as hundreds of injured and displaced. The Sudanese Army is oppressing Human Rights defenders and journalists, resorting to arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance and restricting freedom of expression creating obstacles in the path of communication and restricting accountability.
Mr. President,
We call on the council to condemn these violations and regarding the independent expert on human rights situation in Sudan would like to see reporting on the crimes that have taken place since 2023 and referring this case to the international criminal court in order to protect journalists and engage in accountability.
Thank you, Mr. President.
