As part of the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Coalition of
Sudanese Human Rights Organizations and their international allies submitted a written
statement (A\/HRC\/60\/NGO\/80) addressing the escalating humanitarian tragedy in Sudan.
The statement stressed that the Sudanese Army has committed, and continues to commit,
grave and systematic violations against civilians that threaten the enjoyment of all civil,
political, economic, social, and cultural rights, while flagrantly undermining the right to
development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement highlighted that the Sudanese Army bears direct responsibility for crimes and
violations amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, through indiscriminate
aerial bombardments of unarmed civilians and the destruction of essential infrastructure,
including hospitals, schools, and markets. It also cited cases of mass forced displacement of
millions of civilians, including women and children, as a result of sieges and systematic
attacks that have turned vast areas into humanitarian disaster zones.
The coalition further emphasized that the army\u2019s policy of suppressing public freedoms and
imposing severe restrictions on civil society and the media aims to obscure the crimes
committed, prevent their documentation, and shield perpetrators from accountability. The
statement warned that such policies constitute a serious obstacle to justice and international
accountability efforts, and undermine Sudan\u2019s obligations under international human rights
and humanitarian law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The written submission also underlined that the catastrophic situation in Sudan goes beyond
the security dimension, extending to the collapse of health and education systems, as well as
worsening poverty and hunger. According to recent UN reports, more than 30 million
people\u2014half of them women and children\u2014are facing acute food insecurity.
In conclusion, the Coalition of Sudanese Human Rights Organizations and their international
allies called on the Human Rights Council to take urgent and decisive action to ensure the
protection of civilians in Sudan, launch an independent international investigation into the
crimes committed, and refer those responsible to the International Criminal Court. The
statement further stressed the need to end impunity and to support urgent humanitarian efforts
that guarantee a life of dignity for the Sudanese people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
